RabbitMQ has recently addressed significant access control flaws within its widely adopted open-source messaging broker, which, if left unpatched, could jeopardize enterprise application data and potentially grant attackers deep control over messaging infrastructures. These vulnerabilities, identified by Miggo Security, reveal OAuth secrets to unauthenticated users, enabling low-privileged accounts to access sensitive information across tenant deployments. “RabbitMQ acts as the communication backbone for modern applications, carrying essential data like orders and authentication events,” said Miggo researchers. With over 15 million downloads annually, the platform stands as an attractive target for malicious actors. Security gaps of this nature not only risk the integrity of data but could also expose enterprises to extensive reputational damage, regulatory scrutiny, and financial loss.

Impacting versions as far back as 3.13.0, these vulnerabilities have been resolved in all supported releases, including recent updates. This extensive reach exposes a significant number of deployments, making this a pressing issue for organizations that have been slow to update their infrastructure.

Critical OAuth Configuration Leak

The more serious of the two vulnerabilities is tracked as CVE-2026-57219. It allows anyone with network access to the RabbitMQ management interface to obtain the broker’s OAuth client secret without any authentication measures in place. This kind of oversight is troubling, especially for systems that form the backbone of digital ecosystems.

This issue arises from an outdated management endpoint, “GET/api/auth,” which erroneously exposed RabbitMQ’s OAuth configuration, including the sensitive client secret. In systems configured with OAuth providers such as Microsoft Entra ID, Auth0, or Keycloak, attackers could exploit the leaked secret to secure an administrator token, granting comprehensive control over the messaging setup. The implications of a token compromise are staggering; an assailant could manipulate messages, intercept communications, or even alter configurations without raising any alarms.

The flaw has been assigned a severity score of CVSS 8.7 out of 10, logistically placing it in the category of critically dangerous vulnerabilities. In response, RabbitMQ has removed the problematic endpoint and replaced it with a new authenticated bootstrap mechanism that prevents incidentally exposing the client secret over HTTP. These corrective actions are commendable, but organizations should remain cautious given the nature and potential fallout of the breach.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access, message manipulation, user creation, and alterations to broker configurations, thus undermining the integrity of enterprise applications. The possibility of such breaches raises serious questions about the efficacy of existing security frameworks within widely-used open source solutions. Miggo advises immediate upgrades and the rotating of any compromised OAuth client secrets post-patching, also urging that the management interface be locked down from untrusted networks. After all, the best defense is often a proactive approach.

Broadcom’s Tanzu division oversees RabbitMQ but did not comment on the discoveries at the time of the report, which raises concerns about transparency and accountability in addressing such substantial vulnerabilities.

Authorization Bypass Vulnerability

The second discovered vulnerability, CVE-2026-57221, centers on an authorization bypass linked to the passive operations for queue and exchange declarations in RabbitMQ. This isn't just a minor glitch; it poses major risks to application security.

While attackers necessitate valid login credentials for this exploit, accounts lacking specific permissions can still ascertain the existence of queues and exchanges, along with metadata such as message counts and active consumers, since permission checks are bypassed. Consequently, while the attackers can't directly manipulate messages, they gain access to significant operational intelligence that can inform and enhance the efficacy of subsequent attacks. This kind of reconnaissance can allow them to gauge vulnerabilities in shared environments. Miggo underscores the need for vigilance as this intelligence could be leveraged for later attacks against other tenants utilizing the same virtual host. Imagine the risks when sensitive information is only guarded by a flimsy layer of permissioning.

RabbitMQ has addressed this vulnerability by ensuring that passive declarations enforce the same authorization checks as other operations. Given the absence of a configuration workaround or Web Application Firewall (WAF) mitigation for this issue, organizations are encouraged to promptly upgrade to the patched versions and isolate tenant environments into distinct virtual hosts until the patching process can be completed. The urgency in applying these fixes cannot be overstated; every moment without them can serve as an open invitation to potential attackers.

These vulnerabilities mark the initial CVEs identified by Miggo’s autonomous security research platform, VulnHunter. After confirming the issues with RabbitMQ maintainers, the necessary patches were promptly released.
