For MacBook users, an option to prevent sleep while plugged in can be found in System Settings > Battery > Options. However, it's important to clarify the limitations of KeepingYouAwake: it does not function when the lid is closed. Its documentation explicitly states that it only functions properly on desktops or laptops with lids open. This makes it ideal for scenarios such as presentations, reading materials, or screen recordings where you're actively engaged with the device.

Amphetamine: The Gold Standard for Closed-Lid Sessions

When I need to close the lid yet keep my tasks operational, Amphetamine becomes my utility of choice. This application has established itself as a premier option due to its advanced configurability compared to simpler alternatives.

Amphetamine allows for sessions to be set for unlimited periods, specific durations, or even until a designated time, accounting for ongoing downloads or active applications. Users can determine behaviors concerning display sleep, screen savers, and system sleep as it relates to the MacBook's closed lid.

This level of customization suits my workflow perfectly—where KeepingYouAwake is ideal for scenarios with the lid open, Amphetamine steps in for closed-lid tasks involving extensive download sessions or software installations.

Additionally, Amphetamine can automate these sessions using various triggers: it can keep your Mac active based on connections to external displays, the presence of specific applications, or when the battery exceeds certain thresholds. While this may seem overly complex for simple needs, the granularity it offers is precisely what's advantageous for those who wish to fine-tune their device's settings.

Coca: A Modern App Store Alternative

Coca is a comparatively newer option available on the Mac App Store that’s catching attention for its design and functional capabilities. It promises to maintain your Mac's active state when required, featuring one-click activation similar to KeepingYouAwake, but also incorporates closed-lid support.

Coca is free with optional in-app support and has recently evolved with version 2.0, boasting a redesigned user interface, custom time management options, and improved closed-lid functionality. This makes it appealing for those seeking simplicity yet requiring closed-lid support during extensive tasks.

While Amphetamine stands out as the powerhouse with detailed triggers and session controls, Coca represents a more streamlined solution that still meets essential needs. Users who prefer a clean, modern interface may find Coca particularly appealing for their MacBook sessions.
